BYU track and cross country athlete. Rachel Morrin shares how she and her team continued to grow even with their season abruptly ending due to the pandemic.
“I did not actually think it was real at first. And then when our coach came in and had a meeting with us I realized the season was really over,” Rachel said.
After months of training and sacrifice, COVID-19 shut down the sports world putting a lot of athlete’s dreams on hold. Rachel said the pandemic stopped her outdoor track season and the goals she had with it.
“I was just really sad because I was excited for the season. I felt fit and ready to perform well,” Rachel said.
During the quarantine period, Rachel said she was able to stay motivated by keeping future goals in sight. She said even though the future was uncertain she kept her hopes up for a cross country season in the fall. She kept running daily, doing HIIT workouts, and keeping her mindset goal oriented.
“I think COVID has made me more grateful for opportunities that we have and not take any opportunity for granted that can be taken away from us,” she said.
Rachel has big goals going into her outdoor season, she is currently battling an injury, but is cross training so she's ready to compete when the time comes. Her first goal is to get healthy and her next goal is to make it to the regional meet for track.
Rachel said the BYU cross country team came out of the pandemic stronger than ever. They could have taken their training easy, but instead focused on “winning the wait.” This put the BYU team ahead of the game and they ended their cross country season as national champs.
