After a fun motorcycle filled evening, Christian Kenney and his date, Nichole, were severely cut off by a truck. They didn’t have time to stop. In a move that saved both their lives, Christian laid the bike onto the ground, so that they slid sideways into the truck instead of hitting it head-on, and then grabbed Nichole to make sure she was secure.
Christian and Nichole suffered intense injuries from both the sliding and from hitting the right rear tire of the truck. Christian had road rash on his whole body, broke both femurs, and was admitted to the hospital as a delta minus; Nichole broke one femur, lost half a pinky finger, shattered her elbow, and also had intense road rash. Luckily, Christian waited to ask Nichole on a date until he had purchased a new helmet that she could wear.
Because of COVID, hospitals restricted each patient to two visitors, but only one visitor was allowed to be in the hospital at once. Christian has a very large family, and they were saddened that only their parents were allowed to visit.
While in the hospital, Christian and Nichole posted on Facebook about the accident. Motorcycle enthusiasts saw their posts and decided to do a motorcycle ride that ended in the hospital parking lot, where they did a prayer circle dedicated to them.
“The prayer circle was inspiring. People we didn’t even know were showing up to support my brother and Nichole,” Christian’s sister Sierra Kenney said. “It was inspiring that people were so drawn together for the same love of motorcycles.”
Christian and Nichole have since fully recovered from their injuries, but they will always remember that date, and that strangers rose up to say a prayer for them.
